Amanda and Dave: A Peaceful Wedding on Mt. Washington

How do you seek the joy?
mindfulness. mountains. nature. being outside. live music. road trips. bluegrass. family & friends. cooking. creating. hiking. guitar. meditating. yoga. laughing. living fully
This past summer I was delighted to go and spend a day with Amanda and Dave and their families at the historical Mount Washington Hotel - yes, yes, I know what you are all thinking. You’re thinking, “eric, wasn’t that the place that, in 1944, hosted the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference where delegates from 44 nations convened, establishing the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, setting the gold standard at $35.00 an ounce and designating the United States dollar as the backbone of international exchange?”

yes.

Amanda and Dave had just a lovely ceremony, right on the deck at the foot of the mountains [sidebar: if you are in the northeast and haven’t hiked the presidentials, shame on you. Get out and do it.] there was a beautiful warm summer breeze which accompanied the Buddhist teachings being read. You know how sometimes when thinking of folks you think to yourself “man, they are just really good people.” That’s how I feel about Amanda and Dave. They are just really solid, kind, good people. I left this day a better person.

ao Te Ching by Lao Tzu

Being and non-being create each other.
Difficult and easy support each other.
Long and short define each other.
High and low depend on each other.
Before and after follow each other.

Therefore the Master
acts without doing anything
and teaches without saying anything.
Things arise and she lets them come;
things disappear and she lets them go.
She has but doesn’t possess,
acts but doesn’t expect.
When her work is done, she forgets it.
That is why it lasts forever.

Vows
Let us vow to bear witness to the wholeness of life,
realizing the completeness of each and every thing.
Embracing our differences,
I shall know myself as you,
and you as myself.
May we serve each other
for all our days,
here and everywhere.
Let us vow to open ourselves to the abundance of life.
Freely giving and receiving, I shall care for you,
for the trees and stars,
as treasures of my very own.
May we be grateful
for all our days,
here and everywhere.
Let us vow to forgive all hurt,
caused by ourselves and others,
and to never condone hurtful ways.
Being responsible for my actions,
I shall free myself and you.
May we be kind
for all our days,
here and everywhere.
Let us vow to remember that all that appears will disappear.
In the midst of uncertainty,
I shall sow love.
Here! Now! I call to you:
Let us together live
The Great Peace that we are.
May we give no fear
for all our days,
here and everywhere.
