Emmy and Rafael were my first wedding of the season a couple of months ago. It was a very small and intimate celebration with lots of joy and, best of all, totally chill and mellow. It wasn't about the flowers or the shoes or the vintage anything. It was just simply beautiful and all about the people and the love. My kind of event. It was a true honor to be there to document the first official moments of their new family and stay attuned to what's important. Friends, family, and heart.

How do I seek the joy? Taking naps with little Reese and Tigger, hiking up mountains with Rafael, painting on a Saturday night with Rafael, watching a really good movie then discussing it later with good friends over tea, going for a run on a cool sunny day, and quietly observing a sunset.

Seeing things from a different perspective. That's what this post is all about. Trying to take a step back and not just looking but seeing things in  way that may be against your initial instinct [or more likely, against the industry's instinct.]

A couple weeks ago I drove out to Manchester, VT [which is just lovely, by the way] to help my friend Dave shoot Meghan and Matt's wedding. I always love tagging along to shoot with folks when I can but due to the nature of my schedule, I find myself being able to do it less and less - so when I DO get to do it, it's all that much sweeter. When I asked Dave what he wanted me to do, if there was anything specific that he'd like me to document for him, his response was simple - 'Just go have fun.' Done. At one point he even tossed his Tilt Shift my way and said something to the effect of, 'Go try using this.' Done. Watching Dave work is awesome and taking a step outside of myself to shoot with the same drive and passion as I always do but from a perspective that I usually don't was a blast. Hope you enjoy the few images from their lovely celebration...

There is a subtle humor and whimsy that lives within our peccadilloes, something that I feel can only be illuminated by embodying the three most important core traits of a storyteller: simplicity, patience, and compassion. We are our most beautiful when we are most ourselves and authentically engaged in moment to moment experiences. You will never hear me say 'I want this,' or 'Give me that because I'm going for this...' The images we make together are not about me or what I want, they are about you. They are about who you are, not what you are and when your grandchildren pull your book off the shelf and dive into your story, they will be given a crystal clear window into their past and have so much more to say than 'Gee, they looked pretty.' The more stories that are told, the richer and more textured our world becomes. Simple as that.

I do not believe that crappy pictures are better than no pictures at all. We can harm a memory or remembrance by not doing the moment justice with poor documentation. I embrace the challenge of preserving memories, not creating them for my couples. I always aim to shoot from the perspective [both literally and metaphorically] of a dear guest celebrating with his friends. I believe the world is a better place the more stories that are told and the less that weddings are about stuff and details.

I believe in what I do and do it with all the love I can muster.

I love what you believe and it truly shows in your work. It's what I want my work to be about.

We celebrate the little moments, we say I love you when the other least expects it, we learn from each other and try to appreciate views through one another's eyes, we stay positive, we look forward to new experiences with traveling, learning, cooking together and remember that spontaneity and passion will keep us young at heart. We think about the world and how hard it can be and how fortunate we are to be where we stand.

Holly and Craig shared a lovely day out in Vermont this past fall. It was an absolute joy to be with them [especially because there was someone there making apple cider donuts]. It was a blustery day, wind whipping through the vines and what was left of the fall colors. The crispness of the late fall sun on your face - not quite apricity yet - is enough to make an entire year of worry just melt away. Friends and family from Long Island made the trek up to celebrate with the beautiful pair and were rewarded with love, joy, and, of course, apple cider donuts.
